Troop 218 Enjoys the Beane Property
for Griddle & Dutch Oven Camping!
On the weekend of Feb. 26-27 we camped on the Beane Property on the NE Cape Fear River and learned to cook on griddles and dutch ovens. Some of the best meals you'll ever eat in scouting come from these two utensils. Spring has sprung and it was a great weekend. We had scout competitions, a hike around the property viewing a variety of terrain including wild rice fields, newer scouts earned their Totin' Chip & the weather was awesome! (Pics)

Uwharrie Hiking/Camping Trip,
April 9-11, 2010
We came, we saw, we hiked...
....we had a GREAT time!
15 Scouts & 3 adult leaders spent the Azalea Festival weekend hiking and camping the Uwharrie National Forest (click name for link) just outside of Troy, NC. It was a challenging 12 mile hike along the Dutchman's Creek trail & Uwharrie trail in what was perfect hiking & camping weather (clear skies with lows: mid 40's/highs: low 70's). We hiked in for a mile Friday night after our arrival in the dark & set up camp. Sat. saw roughly 7 miles over gradually steepening terrain. Sunday saw sore muscles for the 4 mile hike out. All gear & food was carried in and trash was carried out as we were primitive camping using the Leave No Trace guidelines.
After backpacking breakfasts of oatmeal, lunches & snacks of granola bars & dinner of Rommen noodles with chicken and applesauce, the troop enjoyed a timely stop at the Rockingham Pizza Hut on our way back to Wilmington. We saw a few tumbles, a number of scratches, a couple burns & lots of sore muscles, but nothing out of the ordinary. Thank you H. Beddoes & G. Jones for directing the trip & J. Roberts for coordinating equipment. Everyone involved had a great time!

Troop 218 welcomes oyster season on Lea Island!!!
Oct. 17-18th, 2009
17 Scouts and 10 adults from our troop travelled by 8 boats from Forrest Sound marina to Lea Island to camp, cook out, oyster, fish, surf, hike and generally have fun. We had a blast! While the surf was only marginal, Mr. Canady & troop staff showed scouts how to harvest, clean & steam oysters on the 3rd day of this year's season. We gathered over 5 bushels of beautiful Stump Sound oysters. Mr. Burgess then lead a hike to the south end of the island. Mr. Prevatte provided bluefish and spanish mackeral for the scouts to grill. The weather cleared & was very cool with nightime temps in the mid 40's and N-NW winds at 10-20mph. Perfect Fall Carolina weather!
Witnessing astronomical tides, Scout's families were shuttled over before dusk to share in our old fashioned oyster roast complete with a campfire, slaw, hush-puppies & hot dogs (for those still acquiring a taste for oysters). After s'mores & clean up, families were shuttled back to the mainland.
Sunday after breakfast, we packed and completely cleaned up our campsite leaving the area cleaner than when we arrived, practicing our Leave No Trace camping. Click here for an album link to 100 photos!
*We wish to thank the owners of Hutaff/Lea Island, Forrest Sound marina , the Audobon Society & the Canady family for allowing us to use their property, facilities and equipment for a great weekend!
