Troop 218 Camps at Camp Kirkwood in Watha, NC & Helps provide Renovation to the Camp's Facilities

11 Scouts & Staff spent the weekend of Dec. 5-6th performing Community Service and renovations to Camp Kirkwood, A Presbytery Youth Camp, that serves Southeastern NC.  Our crew installed pavers around a community fire pit & cleaned out 9 cabins in preparation for the construction crews that are rewiring and repairing each cabin.  The Camp was most appreciative and served us cocoa & snacks while we worked.  ASM Larry Murray instructed our scouts in the proper use of axes and chainsaws as we prepared wood for our campfire to warm our chilly Sat. night fire.  Thanks to those that contributed, Ms. Brenda Cherry & to Camp Kirkwood's staff.

Troop 218 Supports our local churches on Scout Sunday

Troop 218 scouts attended and participated in services at two local churches for
Scout Sunday, a Nationwide event for Cub & Boy Scouts.  On Feb. 6th our troop attended services at our sponsoring church, Winter Park Presbyterian Church.  On Feb. 27th, we had scouts in the Honor Guard at Wrightsville United Methodist Church.  It's an honor to be involved with two such churches and all they do for our community.

Our most recent activity in September, 2010 was the spreading 40 bales of pine straw and helping to landscape the surrounding areas of the church grounds.  We appreciate the continued support and sanctuary the chruch provides for our troop.

Roger Hendrix Memorial Toy Run

Our troop supports the Roger Hendrix Memorial Toy Run each year by donating  $200 annually to this worthy cause from our fund-raising efforts of popcorn sales.  The motorcycle event has run for over 20 years and now has over 200 hundred participants collecting toys and food for the Topsail Township area.  Troop council member, Peggy Hendrix Irwin,  helps organize the event which is named after her past-husband, Roger Hendrix.

Good Shepherd Kitchen

Every year our troop participates in helping serve food to those eating at the Wilmington Good Shepherd kitchen.  Less fortunate citizens are provided nutritous hot meals particularly important during the colder Winter months.

Scouting For Food

Each November Troop 218 collects canned and boxed food to donate to the Good Shepherd Ministeries on Marstellar St. in downtown Wilmington This helps provide meals for those less fortunate.  This is part of the national Scouting For Food Program

4th Annual Cozy Coats Program

Troop 218 collects coats for this Council-wide program that provides winter coats for those whom need each November at Hugh McRae Park, through the Good Shepherd Ministries.

100 Years of Scouting!

Our Council-Wide Day of Service was
Jan. 9th, 2010

14 Scouts & 3 leaders met at the Wrightsville Beach Park basketball court @ 12 noon, Sat. and cleaned the Wrightsville Beach Loop.  We stopped at the Trolley Stop for hot dogs & finished our cleanup by 2pm. It was a brisk 37 degrees with a North wind making it feel more like mid 20's F.

We contributed 34 man-hours toward the National Day of Service celebrating 100 years of Scouting in the U.S.  Thank you to all whom participated.

North Carolina  Big Sweep

This year's statewide Big Sweep was scheduled statewide for Sat. in Sept 25th, 2010. As this conflicted with our Annual Popcorn Fund-Raiser, we could not participate..  Our troop has participated in Beach Sweep with the Wilmington chapter of the Surfrider Foundation at both Wrightsville Beach and Masonboro Island over the past few years.  Big Sweep's goal is to help collect litter and pick up trash left behind by errant beach users and keep our beaches, marshes and waterways clean.

Christmas Sponsored Child

Our troop provides gifts for a specific child or family in need during each Holiday Season.  Wrapped toys and gifts are provided to help spread the Holiday cheer to a specific family in need.
